David L. Bouwman, M.D.

After training in General Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Wayne State University School of Medicine in the 1970s, Dr. Bouwman dedicated his career to our Department, rising to become associate chair of the Department and the Alexander J. Walt Endowed Chair of Surgical Education, before his retirement in 2019.

Mary Ann Kosir, M.D.

Trained in General Surgery at Wayne State University and as a physician scientist at Case Western Reserve University in the late 1970s/early 1980s, Dr Kosir became an accomplished researcher and a full professor of surgery in this Department, retiring in 2020. She also held a joint appointment as a professor of oncology at the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

Larry Stephenson, M.D.

Educated at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and trained in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Alabama and the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Stephenson was awarded an honorary Master of Arts degree for his scholarship as an historian. He practiced at Wayne State University for 22 years, retiring as Specialist-in-Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Detroit Medical Center in 2011 but remaining active as official Historian to the School of Medicine. He was made an Honored Professor in the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in 2009 and served in the US Army Reserve for 11 years, earning the Army Achievement Medal during active duty in Operation Dessert Storm (1991).

Sugawa square
Choichi Sugawa, MD

Educated and trained in General Surgery at the University of Tokyo, Dr. Sugawa came to Detroit in 1969 to undertake research in stress bleeding and to give instruction in gastric endoscopy and fiberoptic colonoscopy using technologies he had helped to develop in Japan. He ended up spending the rest of his distinguished career here, retiring in 2021 as a full professor. 

Weaver A
Arthur Weaver, M.D.

Educated and trained in general and thoracic surgery at Pacific Union College, Loma Linda University, Pontiac General Hospital, and the University of Michigan in the later 1940s/early 1950s, Dr. Weaver served as Chief of Surgery at the Karachi Seventh-Day Adventist Hospital in Pakistan before joining our faculty in 1967, rising to full professorship through a long and distinguished career.

Robert Wilson, M.D.

Dr. Wilson received his BA from Lehigh University and his MD from Temple University. After general surgery residency and fellowships in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Wayne State University in the 1960s he rose to become Director of the WSU Affiliated Hospitals Program in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Assistant Dean at the WSU School of Medicine.
