Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University Program

Department of Surgery

Message from Dr. Guillermina Nava
Program Director, Plastic and Reconstructive Residency Program

Welcome:

Thank you for your interest in the Plastic Surgery Residency at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC).   The residency is a fully accredited ACGME three-year independent program with two available positions per year.  Graduates of the program would be eligible for certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

The mission of the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery plastic surgery residency program is to train residents to become outstanding comprehensive plastic and reconstructive surgeons. The training program seeks to develop in its resident’s sound surgical judgment and technical ability by developing graduated responsibility in all aspects of patient care.  The program provides a range of clinical and academic experiences to foster competence and independence in the preoperative evaluation, clinical decision making, operative skills and postoperative management of the plastic surgery patient.

Our residents are a culturally diverse group from all regions of the United States.  We seek candidates who are independent, hard-working, goal driven, and possess strong academic and clinical skills. We prepare and support our residents in a variety of career goals including further fellowships, employment in an academic setting or private practice opportunities.

The DMC is the largest healthcare provider in southeast Michigan with more than 2,000 licensed beds and 3,000 affiliated physicians. Our residents have the benefit of interacting with many of our medical experts, who are nationally recognized with a reputation for excellence that draws patients to many world-class programs. The DMC is also the leading academically integrated system in the metropolitan Detroit region.

The DMC and other affiliated rotation sites serve a diverse socioeconomic demographic including urban and suburban patient populations as well as United States Veterans. The DMC serves as an essential referral network for the southeastern Michigan region.  Residents care for patients at multiple level one trauma centers as well as an NCI designated comprehensive cancer center. The Detroit Medical Center has academic affiliation both with Wayne State University School of Medicine & Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.

“The DMC’s record of service has provided medical excellence throughout the history of the Metropolitan Detroit area. From the founding of Children’s Hospital in 1886, to the creation of the first mechanical heart at Harper Hospital 50 years ago, to our compassion for the underserved, our legacy of caring is unmatched.”
