Iljana M. Gaffar, M.D.
Dr. Gaffar was born and raised in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. After high school, she attended the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine’s accelerated six-year BA/MD program. Her general surgery residency was completed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania. During a two-year research fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, she studied pancreatic developmental biology and beta-cell regeneration under the direction of Dr. George Gittes. Dr. Gaffar was welcomed to Detroit as the Wayne State University School of Medicine Pediatric Surgery Fellow at Children’s Hospital of Michigan on August 1st, 2016.
Anthony Munaco, M.D.
Dr. Munaco grew up in Southeast Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan for both undergraduate and medical school. His general surgery residency was completed at Henry Ford Hospital. He took time during residency to complete a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and Pediatric Research Fellowship in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. After completing general surgery residency, he completed a 1 year fellowship in Pediatric Colorectal Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital with Dr. Alberto Peña before returning to Detroit as the Wayne State University School of Medicine pediatric surgery fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in July 2015. Dr. Munaco has a loving and patient wife and three wonderful children.
Michelle Veenstra, MD.
Dr. Veenstra grew up in Grandville, Michigan. She attended Michigan State University for the combined BS/MD program. She obtained a BS in Physiology and an MD from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Dr. Veenstrat then completed her general surgery residency at the Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. She went on to complete a Research Fellowship and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Michigan for two years during her residency. Dr. Veenstra is very excited and looking forward to her Pediatric Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan.
Paulette Abbas, MD.
Dr. Abbas was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. She attended UC-Davis for undergraduate education and returned to Texas to attend medical school at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. She graduated from the general surgery residency program at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. During her residency, she completed a two-year Clinical Research Fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital and received a Master of Clinical Sciences from Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Abbas has a wonderful supportive husband and a daughter who are thrilled to move to Detroit, away from the Texas heat. Dr. Abbas is excited and honored to have the opportunity to work at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan and is looking forward to starting her fellowship in August 2018.
