About the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship

The Pediatric Surgery Fellowship program at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit is a fully accredited training program that offers one position per year to a highly qualified surgeon. Our program has the distinction of being the eighth accredited pediatric training program in the country and has trained a pediatric surgical fellow every year since 1964.

The Children’s Hospital of Michigan considers highly qualified applicants who have completed a general surgery residency in the United States or Canada.

The main goal of the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship is to provide care, education, research, advocacy and prevention, which will benefit children, their families and their communities. Our vision is to improve and advance optimal pediatric surgical care for all patients and families.

The department of Pediatric Surgery performs over 3000 operations under the supervision of our faculty. There are 6,000 outpatient visits annually, which include pre and post operative visits for patients undergoing surgical procedures as well as follow-up of children with acquired and congenital anomalies.

The fellowship program is comprised of two clinical years and is designed to give the fellow an experience in the preoperative, operative, and postoperative surgical care of the child, including pediatric surgical physiology and the social dynamics of pediatric care. Incorporated into this experience will be a graduated level of responsibility in which the first year fellow is strictly supervised and the second year fellow takes on increasing responsibility, being primarily responsible for managing the Pediatric Surgery service. Upon graduation, the Pediatric Surgery fellow will demonstrate sufficient competence to enter the practice of Pediatric Surgery without direct supervision.

The fellowship program at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan has a 100% board exam passage rate and graduates are heavily recruited for job opportunities across the country. We encourage all highly qualified applicants to consider our program.
